This two and a half hour horse ride takes you through the oldest forest in Glacier National Park with Red Cedar and Hemlock trees providing a cool shade. Pop out of the forest to enjoy Upper McDonald Creek at the Dancing Water Cascades. You’ll have a glimpse of everything from Mountain views to Huckleberry patches and Glacial Erratics. Keep your eyes open for the rare sighting of a Grizzly Bear! The beautiful old growth forest of the Lake McDonald area is a special treat and we are excited to share it with you.
Glacier National Park Rafting
When it’s time for the exhilarating whitewater rafting, you’ll enjoy approximately a three – four hour long whitewater rafting adventure depending on the time of year. Your river rafting trip winds about 8 miles, along Glacier’s southwestern border, through the John Stevens Canyon on glacier blue colored Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Flathead River. On the river, you paddle and become part of the crew that maneuvers the raft through the 9 named rapids. The rapids are rated class II and III, making for a fun and splashy whitewater rafting adventure during your stay in Glacier National Park!
If you’d rather sit back and relax and take in all the scenery on the federally protected Wild and Scenic Middle Fork of the Flathead River, that’s great, too! Our office team would be happy to schedule on our scenic rafting section of the Flathead River as an alternative to the whitewater.

Swan Mountain Outfitters has several locations inside Glacier National Park to choose from. They also have rides right across the street from Great Northern Resort at the Rawhide Corral, and offer a variety of times and rides throughout the day.
“What about experience?” No rafting or horseback riding experience is necessary for these adventures.
This stretch of river is great for children age 12 and up during our Spring Runoff and for children age 8 and up in July and August.
This is an outstanding way to spend a summer day with your whole family!
Most people prefer to do the trail ride in the morning so they have a better opportunity to see wildlife and then return to Great Northern Resort after a lunch break. After a short drive up the canyon we put in for a half-day of whitewater adventure.
We return to the resort in the late afternoon where you can view photos of your rafting trip. Our office will be happy to help you with arrangements for your trail ride.
Make sure to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes for the trail ride and good water shoes with a back on them for the whitewater trip.
